On Wednesday, 14 December, Arvils Ašeradens takes office as Minister of Finance, replacing the former Minister of Finance, Jānis Reirs, after the Saeima expressed its trust in the newly-formed Cabinet of Ministers.
Arvils Ašeradens obtained a master's degree in Economic Geography from the University of Latvia. Before entering politics, he was an entrepreneur.
Since 2010, Arvils Ašeradens has been a member of Parliament in the 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th Saeima. From 2016 to 2019, he was Minister of Economics. Previously, he was parliamentary secretary for the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Welfare.
In 2007, Arvils Ašeradens was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, 5th Class.
The former Minister of Finance, Jānis Reirs, spent the longest period of time in office during Latvia's independence. He served as Minister of Finance from 5 November 2014 to 2 November 2016, and then as Minister of Welfare for more than two years. In 2019, Mr. Reirs returned as Minister of Finance and served the full cycle of the 13th Saeima.
